AI leaders head to the U.N. Security Council as governments debate risks and safeguards

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Hugging Face co-founder Clément Delangue are scheduled to brief the United Nations Security Council on artificial intelligence on September 23, Reuters reported.

The meeting comes during the U.N. General Assembly as governments debate whether increasingly capable AI systems need stronger international guardrails. Reuters reported that Altman is expected to argue for benchmarks that pair advanced capabilities with safeguards.

The session is a policy discussion, not the adoption of a binding global AI regime. Governments remain divided over how much oversight is appropriate and which institutions should set common standards.
