U.N. experts investigating human rights in Nicaragua said state institutions had carried out enforced disappearances, torture and arbitrary detention of political opponents in a widespread and systematic campaign, Reuters reported on September 22.
The panel said police, prosecutors and intelligence services worked through a chain of command reaching senior levels of government. Nicaragua’s diplomatic mission in Geneva did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
The experts said they verified 161 cases of enforced disappearance since April 2018 and called on the government to provide information on missing people and end the practice.
