A historically strong El Niño expected to peak between November 2026 and January 2027 threatens food security in Central America, particularly Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, the International Rescue Committee told Reuters.
The group said poor rains and drought could combine with elevated food, fuel and fertilizer costs. Reuters also noted that El Niño conditions can affect rainfall feeding the Panama Canal.
