NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has identified a newly formed crater on the Moon created by an impact between April and May 2024, according to a NASA feature published September 23.
NASA said the impacting object was estimated to be roughly 10 to 20 meters across. The resulting crater spans an area roughly comparable to two soccer fields and is surrounded by a cooler thermal signature around the warmer impact zone.
Researchers estimate impacts of this size occur on the Moon on the order of once every 132 years. The estimate is statistical, so it does not imply a fixed schedule for future impacts.
