Scientists identified a new amoeba species, Incendiamoeba cascadensis, from hot springs in California's Lassen Volcanic National Park that can undergo cell division at 63°C, or 145.4°F.
Researchers reported that the single-celled eukaryote remains active at 64°C and can recover after exposure to 70°C. The findings were published in the journal Cell.
