Business activity in the euro zone expanded at its fastest pace in more than three years in September, according to a preliminary purchasing managers' survey reported by Reuters on September 23.
The composite reading exceeded every forecast in a Reuters poll. Companies also reported higher input costs, reflecting continued pressure from energy prices.
Purchasing managers' indexes are survey-based indicators rather than final GDP data. The stronger reading could nevertheless influence expectations for European Central Bank policy if inflation pressure remains elevated.
