California Governor Gavin Newsom signed seven bills on September 21 aimed at expanding oversight of data centers, including requirements related to electricity use, water consumption, land use and workforce needs.
The state says the measures are designed in part to prevent grid-upgrade and generation costs tied to large data centers from being shifted to other ratepayers. An industry trade group warned that overlapping requirements could discourage development.
